Here’s an amazing TED talk from a new friend of mine, Joselyn DiPetta, whom I fortuitously met in the final moments of the 2015 Wisdom 2.0 Conference after party. Her above talk,”The Missing Piece in the Gender Equality Puzzle” is fantastic, and is a must see for anyone wanting to:
- transcend the limitations of stereotypes
- understand the empathic nature of true dialogue
- cultivate their own creative Self-expression, regardless of gender.
As it relates to Joselyn’s talk, my working definition of creativity is this: Creativity is connecting with the world and affecting it in a meaningful way. From my experience, “connecting with the world”, which is also known as creative insight, has a feminine quality to it, a quality of deep empathic relatedness with the world around us, one that transcends the confines of our own beliefs and ego identies. On the other side, “affecting the world”, which I associate with the manifestation of those insights, is more associated with the masculine, and one where we draw upon a clear sense of who we are and what we can and cannot do.
Both, however, are required to be fully Self-expressed; that is, both are required for the coveted experience of creative flow, of connecting with the world and affect the world in a meaningful way at the same time. Why is this the case? The vibrant creative potential is most fully available not in the extremes, but in the space in between paired opposites, between heaven and earth, birth and death, past and future, and, in this case, in the space between the fully embodied feminine and the fully embodied masculine.
Don’t settle for the uncomfortable dampness of relative humidity. Allow the floodgates of creativity and Self-expression to open fully and enliven everything that you do.
What I thought was a simple after party turned out to be a cosmic wormhole into a whole new understanding of the importance of gender empowerment. Thank you again Joselyn!
