In this clip, filmed while waiting for a bus on a balmy spring morning, a used Ford and other cars await the possibility of a new owner on a tiny lot on South San Pablo Boulevard. Behind me, a closed Chinese take-out restaurant plays violent movies in the window for a nearly deserted sidewalk while AIDS prevention posters cry out for better communication among strangers seeking to merge for the evening.
This place felt like the “bardo” or the strange and sometimes frightful space between lifetimes in the Tibetan Buddhist cosmology. This film is a follow up to my clip on the Temporary Autonomous Zone a few weeks back, the conclusion of a long and wonderful night spent exploring the multifaceted universe known as Oakland, California, a night spent celebrating the mind-blowing creativity all around me. Having just walked out from a strange anarchist compound in West Oakland (I didn’t know such things existed!) this clip marked my last few moment in this glorious city, awaiting a bus to take me back to my car at the North Berkeley BART station. http://www.youtube.com/my_videos_edit?ns=1&video_id=nPlPQ2azQXA
